Understanding Life Insurance Beneficiaries: How to Choose and When to Update

Posted by Norris Agency, Inc. on August 10, 2026

When you purchase a life insurance policy, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing who will receive the policy’s death benefit. This person or entity is called your beneficiary, and the designation you make can have significant financial implications for the people you love. Understanding how beneficiaries work—and knowing when to update your designation—is an essential part of managing your life insurance coverage.

Primary vs. Contingent Beneficiaries

Most life insurance policies allow you to name more than one type of beneficiary:

  • Primary Beneficiary: This is the first in line to receive the death benefit when you pass away. You can name one person or multiple people as primary beneficiaries and specify what percentage of the benefit each person receives.
  • Contingent Beneficiary: Also called a secondary beneficiary, this person or entity receives the death benefit if the primary beneficiary is unable to—for example, if the primary beneficiary passes away before you do. Naming a contingent beneficiary helps ensure that your benefit reaches someone you’ve chosen, rather than going through probate.

Common Mistakes When Naming Beneficiaries

Even well-intentioned beneficiary designations can lead to complications if they’re not set up correctly. Some common mistakes include:

  • Not naming a beneficiary at all: If you don’t designate a beneficiary, the death benefit may become part of your estate and go through probate, which can delay distribution and create additional costs.
  • Naming a minor child directly: Minor children generally cannot legally receive a life insurance payout directly. Instead, the funds may be managed by the court until the child reaches adulthood. Naming a trust or a guardian can help address this.
  • Forgetting to name a contingent beneficiary: Without a backup, if your primary beneficiary predeceases you, the benefit may still end up in probate.
  • Using vague language: Listing ‘my children’ without naming them specifically can create ambiguity. Use full legal names whenever possible.

Life Events That Should Prompt a Beneficiary Review

Your beneficiary designation doesn’t automatically update when your life circumstances change—you need to do that yourself. Consider reviewing your beneficiaries after:

  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having or adopting a child
  • The death of a named beneficiary
  • A significant change in your relationship with a named beneficiary
  • A major change in your financial situation or estate plan

Many financial professionals recommend reviewing your beneficiary designations at least every few years, even if you haven’t experienced a major life event.

How to Update Your Beneficiary Information

Updating your beneficiary is typically a straightforward process. Most insurance companies allow you to make changes by completing a beneficiary change form, which may be available online, by mail, or through your insurance agent. In most cases, your most recent beneficiary designation on file with the insurance company supersedes previous designations—even those named in a will.

This is why it’s important to keep your insurance company informed of any changes and to confirm that updates have been processed correctly.
